Solar Tracker Waterproof Connectors: Actuator and Harness
On a solar tracker, actuator power, position feedback and the PV DC loop are separate selection tasks: a catalog connector becomes a valid candidate only when motor stall current, cable jacket outer diameter and mated IP67 sealing conditions all match the specific part number. Here is how to run those checks.
Scope and boundaries
Applies to outdoor single- and dual-axis PV trackers driven by linear actuators, covering the actuator power, position/limit feedback and control-box harness interfaces; the PV string DC loop is a separate selection and is only marked as a boundary here. These materials show what catalog ratings, IP67 test conditions and company-provided durability data cover; they do not yet prove duty-cycle temperature rise, outdoor service life, or PV main-circuit certification for a specific tracker.
Start with the tracker's circuits, not the connector series
On a solar tracker, the actuator power line, the position and limit feedback line and the PV DC circuit are separate selection tasks, and a catalog connector only becomes a valid candidate once motor stall current, cable jacket outer diameter and mated sealing conditions all match the specific part number. A tracker drive typically combines a linear actuator motor, position or limit signals, and a control-box entry, and each path carries different voltage, current and verification needs.
Treat the PV string DC loop as a separate inquiry: a connector described for solar applications is not automatically suitable for series high-voltage DC, and no cross-brand mating is implied. This article covers the actuator and harness interfaces and marks PV DC only as a boundary.

What the actuator loop asks of the connection
Fix the actuator's electrical profile before opening the catalog. Continuous current sets the floor, but starting and locked-rotor events set the stress on contacts and cable, and duty cycle decides how much heat must be absorbed per movement. Because the actuator travels with the tracker, the harness needs bend allowance across the full stroke, without tensile load or sharp folds inside the motion range.
- Motor rated voltage, continuous current, starting and locked-rotor current
- Action duration and duty cycle
- Cable fixing method, and whether it sees repeated flexing or a drag chain
- A service disconnect position that allows actuator replacement without rewiring

Actuator power candidates and their limits
For actuator power, the catalog lists two wire-to-wire push-lock candidates, shown in the table below: a 2-pin M19 configuration at 250 V and 20 A per contact for conductors up to 2.5 mm² on 6–10 mm cable, and a 2-pin M25 configuration at 600 V and 35 A per contact for up to 4 mm² on 3.5–13 mm cable, both marked IP67. The conductor figure is a published upper limit, and the cable jacket outer diameter must fall inside the chosen part's sealing range.
If the actuator's starting or locked-rotor current exceeds the catalog rated current per contact, or the cable jacket outer diameter falls outside the part's sealing range, stop and request verification for the exact part number instead of treating the rating as coverage; if both match, the part can be shortlisted. Rated current is declared per contact for the listed configuration; multi-contact loading, conductor size, ambient temperature and heat dissipation all shift the real temperature rise, so the catalog number is a screening value rather than a stall-current commitment. AC/DC system and any actuator-maker-specified interface still need confirmation; identical contact counts do not make interfaces interchangeable.

Feedback and limit signals stay on their own interface
Position and limit feedback belongs on its own connector, not on spare pins of the motor line: low-level signals should not be simply paralleled with motor power contacts. The signal type — Hall, encoder, analog or bus — sets contact count, supply levels, shielding and grounding. Three 8-contact wire-to-wire options appear in the table below: an M12 threaded configuration at 60 V and 5 A with protection not listed, and push-lock M16 and M19 configurations at 110 V and 100 V, both marked IP67, each with its own conductor and cable-OD window. Eight contacts describe quantity only; they do not imply Ethernet or any specific bus capability. After an actuator replacement, re-check feedback direction and line labeling before returning to service.

Harness conditions that decide whether IP67 holds
IP67 indicates dust protection and short-term immersion under specified test conditions, and it holds only when the connector is correctly mated and locked, seals are intact, and the fitted cable matches the specified outer diameter. Unmated ports, the far cable end and equipment openings need their own protection. Long-term immersion and high-pressure washdown are different test regimes: if site cleaning involves them, submit water depth, duration, temperature and cleaning method, and select a configuration with corresponding verification records.
Mechanically, support the cable so the connector body carries no tensile load, keep bend radii generous near the tail, and match the clamping range to the actual jacket OD; conductor cross section and cable outer diameter are independent checks, since the same mm² can arrive in different jacket diameters. The 1,000-hour UV-resistance figure is company-provided information tied to material grade, color and product version, and accelerated hours do not convert directly into outdoor service life.

When one hybrid interface replaces two cable runs
One site condition can flip the selection: how maintenance disconnects the actuator. If technicians must isolate motor power while keeping position feedback alive, keep two separate interfaces. If the control-box entry allows one mating cycle for both, a hybrid insert can consolidate the harness — the catalog M25 3+9 configuration lists power contacts at 300 V and 20 A for conductors up to 2.5 mm² and signal contacts at 100 V and 5 A for up to 0.3 mm², on 3.5–13 mm cable, marked IP67. Each contact group is rated separately and the ratings are never added into a combined value. The listed M19 3+5 variant has no published ratings yet; do not fill the blanks with series maximums — request its data before shortlisting.

Data to submit before a part number is final
None of these interfaces should be mated or unmated under load unless the model documentation explicitly allows it; wire and service in a de-energized state. Final selection then waits on project data:
- Motor rated, starting and locked-rotor current, duty cycle, and any actuator-maker interface specification
- Cable conductor cross section per core in mm², jacket outer diameter in mm, length, routing and flexing requirement
- Feedback signal list with supply levels, shielding and grounding
- Site exposure: mounting orientation, unmated-state protection, temperature range, washdown method, UV and corrosive atmosphere
- PV DC loop requirements, including required certifications and the specified mating part, as a separate inquiry

Frequently asked questions
Are solar tracker connectors the same as PV module connectors?
No. They serve different circuits. Actuator and controller interfaces carry drive power, feedback and communication, while the module DC loop must additionally verify DC rating, polarity, contact protection and the required PV certifications. Handle the two as separate selections.
Does the 20 A or 35 A rating cover motor stall current?
Not by itself. The rating applies per contact to the listed configuration, and real temperature rise depends on loading, conductor size, ambient temperature and heat dissipation. Compare starting and locked-rotor current with the actual duty and request verification where the margin is unclear.
Does an 8-contact feedback connector support Ethernet or a fieldbus?
Contact count alone says nothing about protocol. Confirm signal levels, shielding, wiring definition and the controller's transmission requirements against drawings and verification results before assuming any bus capability.
Is IP67 enough for tracker washdown and years of rain?
IP67 covers dust and short-term immersion under test conditions with the connector correctly mated and sealed. High-pressure cleaning, long-term immersion and UV aging are separate conditions; provide the cleaning method and exposure profile and choose a configuration with matching verification records.
