IP67 Connector Installation Sealing: What the Rating Covers

An IP67 marking certifies dust-tight, temporary-immersion protection only under specified test conditions, with the pair mated and locked, seals intact, and the specified cable fitted. This guide maps where installation sealing actually holds, which duties need separate verification, and which model documents to request.

Scope and boundaries

Applies to outdoor equipment built with LLT circular waterproof connectors whose catalog parameter sets list IP67, covering assembled, mated-and-locked pairs fitted with specified cable. It does not qualify continuous submersion, high-pressure washdown, explosive dust atmospheres, live mating, or unmated-port protection; each of those requires model-specific evidence. No parameter table accompanies this article, so sealing ranges, torque values, and strip dimensions must come from the corresponding model datasheet.

What an IP67 marking actually certifies

A rating mark and a test condition are two different things. IEC 60529 defines the IP code, and IP67 denotes dust-tight construction plus protection against temporary immersion under specified test conditions; it describes a test outcome, not a blanket property of the hardware. An IP67 marking confirms dust-tight, short-term immersion protection only under the specified test conditions and only when the pair is correctly mated and locked, the seals are intact, and the specified cable is fitted and sealed at installation. A standards index entry is not a product certification, and a brochure claim is not a model-level test report; each is a different kind of evidence, and one cannot stand in for another.

Installation states the rating depends on

The declared protection attaches to an assembled state, not to a loose component. For the rating to hold, the connector must be mated with the correct counterpart, fully locked, fitted with intact seals, terminated with cable whose sheath outer diameter matches the sealing structure, and closed up per the model's installation requirements. Anything outside that assembled state is a separate engineering item rather than an automatic extension of the rating.

  • Unmated ports: protection of the open interface must be confirmed separately for the model.
  • The far end of the cable and the equipment opening each need their own sealing measure.
  • Sealing faces, sealing rings, and locking features must stay clean; sand or dust trapped at the interface degrades both mating and sealing.
  • IP6X dust protection applies to the confirmed sealed state and does not qualify the connector for explosive dust atmospheres.

Cable entry: check the sealing range, not just the maximum

Cable entry is a dimensional check, not a rating check. Conductor cross-section in mm² and cable sheath outer diameter in mm are different quantities, and the cable OD must fall inside the sealing clamping range of the specific insert rather than merely below the product maximum. AWG is a gauge designation to be matched per the catalog correspondence, not a substitute for either measurement.

Two cables with the same conductor size can differ in outer diameter because of core count, insulation, or jacket construction, so conductor data and jacket OD are verified separately against the terminal and sealing data of the chosen configuration. Jacket condition and the cable fixing method belong in the same check, because the seal grips the jacket, not the conductors, and a damaged or unsupported cable undermines the clamp.

Where the rating stops: submersion and washdown

Temporary immersion, continuous submersion, and high-pressure or high-temperature washdown are different duties tested under different conditions. If the equipment faces continuous submersion or pressure washing, stop and submit the water depth, duration, temperature, medium, and cleaning method so a separately verified configuration can be selected; if the duty is rain exposure with occasional temporary immersion, proceed to confirm the mating pair, cable outer diameter range, and assembly state against the model datasheet.

Within reviewed LLT material, IP68 appears on certain series pages without complete published depth, duration, and mating conditions, and IP69K currently has no model-matched evidence in the checked catalog data, so neither should be treated as a series-wide capability. An IP rating also does not mean permanent watertightness, and it does not replace corrosion, oil, or aging validation for the actual service environment.

Panel openings and the rest of the enclosure

A sealed connector pair does not seal the box around it. Front panel mount, rear panel mount, flange, and inline describe mounting structures; pin or socket contact form is selected separately; and cutout dimensions, panel thickness, and locking conditions follow the part-number drawing. The interface between the connector shell and the equipment panel is its own sealing item with its own gasket and surface requirements, and the far end of the cable run needs the same discipline. Treating the IP mark on the connector as coverage for the whole enclosure is a misreading of what the rating attaches to.

Rating, certificate, and configuration on a specific model

Before release, separate the three kinds of evidence. The IP rating comes from a test condition; a certificate such as UL 2238, UL 1977, TÜV, or SAA covers the models, ratings, structural versions, and validity state written in that document; and a UL 94 V-0 yellow card covers a plastic material, not the finished connector. Current LLT material confirms that IP67 appears in multiple catalog parameter sets, but it does not publish immersion depth, duration, or unmated-state conditions for every orderable configuration, so those values remain items to confirm for the specific model. Do not extend a series name or a promotional page across order numbers; request the model-matched datasheet and, where the project requires it, the corresponding certificate or test record.

Assembly sequence and what to record

Work de-energized unless the specific configuration is documented for live mating. Verify the counterpart and pin positions, strip and terminate per the model drawing, keep sealing surfaces clean, confirm each seal is seated, then lock as the model requires; torque values and strip dimensions come from the model documentation, not from habit. After assembly, check wiring, clamping, and assembly state, and verify per the project process.

Record the actual exposure conditions, including immersion or washdown parameters, oils, salt fog, UV, and chemical media, because each is assessed separately when the configuration is reviewed. If any of these inputs is missing, the correct next step is a document request, not a field trial under load.

Frequently asked questions

Can an IP67 connector run continuously underwater?

Not on the strength of the IP67 mark alone. IP67 covers temporary immersion under specified test conditions; continuous submersion is a different duty. Provide water depth, duration, temperature, and medium so a configuration with corresponding verification can be selected.

Is the connector protected when it is not mated?

That state is not covered automatically. Unmated-port protection is a separate item to confirm for the specific model, and the datasheet or engineering contact should state how the open interface is protected.

The cable OD is below the connector maximum, so will it seal?

Not necessarily. The jacket outer diameter must fall within the sealing clamping range of the specific sealing insert. A cable that is too thin will not be gripped and sealed, so check the full range, not just the upper limit.

Does a series name such as M12 or M29 guarantee the same IP67 protection across versions?

No. Ratings can differ between mounting forms and product columns within a series, and a series name alone also does not establish intermateability. Confirm the exact configuration, mating part, and assembly state against the model datasheet.
