Multi Pin Waterproof Connector Wiring Verification Guide
Wiring an M16 multi pin waterproof connector starts before the crimper: match the drawing revision to the exact part number, read the face view in its marked direction, and verify every conductor against the pin map. This guide gives the check order and the stop conditions.
Scope and boundaries
Applies to LLT M16 multi pin waterproof connectors in 2-12 contact versions and mixed layouts such as 2+2, 2+8 and 3+3, covering wiring verification during harness assembly and equipment connection. Strip lengths, torque values and cutouts follow the model drawing. IP67 performance depends on correct mating, locking, intact seals and a cable OD inside the sealing range. Live mating, breaking and cross-vendor intermateability are not assumed.
Start de-energized, with the drawing revision in hand
Once the backshell is closed, a swapped pair of conductors is no longer visible, so the wire sequence has to be settled before termination, not discovered after. Work de-energized: isolate the circuit, apply the site lockout practice, and verify absence of voltage. The connector is not an isolating device, and no M16 configuration should be assumed to support live mating or load breaking.
Pull the end-face drawing that belongs to the exact ordering code, not only the series overview, and record its revision or the wire list version on the work order. If the harness shop and the equipment builder hold different revisions of the pin assignment, resolve that before crimping: a later continuity test can only prove the harness matches one of the two documents.
- Ordering code checked against delivered parts: contact count, contact gender, mounting form.
- Drawing revision or wire list version written on the work order, matched on both sides.
- Circuit isolated and verified de-energized before stripping or un-mating.

Read the face view in its marked direction
A pin map is unambiguous when three items are marked on it: viewing direction, locating reference and contact gender. Viewing direction means the mating face or the wiring side of the insert; read from the wrong side, the layout is mirrored and every conductor lands on the wrong contact. The locating key fixes which way is up. Contact gender, pin or socket, is a separate field from the housing form, and the two are selected independently.
The catalog face drawings identify contact distribution per contact count. Where gender and viewing direction are not marked, such a drawing does not replace the model-specific wiring diagram, and mirroring a picture never establishes that two parts mate. LLT keeps separate original face views per contact count and contact group for exactly this reason.

Match the wire sequence to the mating half
A harness is only correct against something: the pin table of the equipment it plugs into. Before assigning wire colors, line up the connector end-face drawing, the equipment builder's pin assignment and the harness wire list, and confirm they carry the same revision. Pin numbering follows the manufacturer drawing for that configuration; the M16 series name alone does not establish numbering, coding or cross-vendor mateability.
Check the two halves of the connection separately. On an in-line link, each half has its own face view, contact gender and wire list, and panel cutout or board-thickness data does not apply. On a panel-mounted equipment side with socket contacts, also confirm supply direction and how the unmated side is protected, because that is the side left exposed when the pair is apart.

Mixed power-and-signal layouts: two maps, two ratings
M16 catalog layouts include mixed groups such as 2+2, 2+3, 2+4, 3+3 and 2+8 alongside straight 2-12 contact versions. A notation like 2+8 describes two contact groups in one shell, and each group is its own electrical case: current, voltage and conductor size are checked per group, and the two ratings are never added into a whole-connector figure. Decide which positions carry power and which carry signal before color assignment, and keep that group boundary visible on the wire list.
The summary table below shows why the boundary matters: as contact count rises, the per-contact rating and maximum conductor size fall, from 250 V / 15 A for 2 to 4 contacts, to 110 V / 5 A for 5 to 8, and 60 V / 5 A for 9 to 12, with conductor limits from 1.5 mm2 down to 0.2 mm2. Ratings apply per selected configuration, and simultaneous loading of many contacts raises temperature, so the model's specification sheet stays the final check.

Terminate, seal and lock: what the pin map does not specify
With the sequence fixed, termination becomes a workmanship task with model-specific numbers. Strip lengths, crimp tooling and tightening torques are not given in the sources here, so request the assembly drawing for the exact part number instead of borrowing values from another series. Keep sealing faces clean, confirm the seal is seated, and check that the cable jacket OD falls inside the sealing range of the chosen configuration. Conductor cross section and cable OD are separate checks: the same 0.5 mm2 conductor can arrive under very different jackets.
M16 configurations use threaded, quick-lock or self-locking coupling structures depending on the version. Confirm full engagement per the structure's own indication rather than appearance alone, and never pull the cable to test retention or to unmate. Give the cable independent support near the connector so harness weight and vibration are not carried by contacts and seals.

Verify the finished harness before first power-up
Keep the circuit de-energized for verification. Buzz out the harness end to end: each conductor lands on its intended pin number, there are no shorts between adjacent contacts, and the group boundary on a mixed layout is respected. Confirm locking state and cable clamp, then record the wire list revision the harness was built to, so maintenance can reproduce the map later. Energizing follows the project's commissioning procedure; the connector check itself stays a de-energized task, not live probing.

Stop conditions and the documents to request
Stop and confirm rather than improvise when: the face drawing lacks a marked viewing direction or gender; the equipment pin table and harness drawing carry conflicting revisions; a seal is cut, deformed or missing; the cable OD sits outside the sealing range; or a mixed layout arrives without separate group ratings. Request the model-specific end-face and wiring drawing with revision, assembly instructions with strip and torque values, and group ratings for mixed configurations. Where the project needs certification evidence such as UL 2238 or UL 1977, coverage follows the certificate's listed models, so ask for the document tied to the exact SKU.

Frequently asked questions
Can I wire from the catalog pin layout drawing alone?
Not by itself. Catalog face drawings show contact distribution per contact count; where gender and viewing direction are not marked, they do not replace the wiring diagram of the exact model. Confirm the end-face drawing tied to your ordering code before terminating.
Do both halves of an in-line M16 link share one pin map?
Each half has its own viewing direction and contact gender, so check both against the equipment pin table. The shared series name does not establish pin numbering or mateability; the two drawings and their revisions do.
Can a 2+8 mixed connector carry the sum of both group ratings?
No. The notation describes two contact groups in one shell; current, voltage and conductor size are verified per group, and the group ratings are not additive. Map power and signal positions to their own limits on the wire list.
