Waterproof Connector Selection: What Limits the Choice First

For industrial equipment, the load and the cable limit a waterproof connector choice before the shell size does. This guide turns equipment duties into a verifiable interface configuration: contact groups, cable sealing, environment, mating halves, certifications, and the information to submit.

Scope and boundaries

Applies to waterproof connector selection for industrial power and signal interfaces, based on LLT's published selection guide and technical applicability notes. The source material defines applicability conditions and company-provided performance information, but it does not include model-level datasheets for a specific application, so final selection still requires the configuration drawing and test records for the chosen SKU. No parameter table is included here; model values come from the chosen SKU's own documents.

Start with the load and the cable, not the shell size

Start with the actual load and cable, then check the interface. The load and the cable limit a waterproof connector selection before the shell size does, because each rating applies to a specific contact group, conductor range and sealing window rather than to a series as a whole. An insert that fits the cutout says nothing about whether its contacts and the attached cable can carry the same duty.

Define the electrical requirement first: working voltage, current, pin count, and whether each line is power or signal. Rated current is marked per contact or per specified contact group, and rated voltage per the corresponding insulation structure. When several cores carry power simultaneously, conductor cross-section, ambient temperature and heat dissipation all shift the temperature rise, so a catalog figure is a screening result rather than final approval.

The condition that rules candidates out first

On most projects, one condition becomes the binding constraint before any comparison of brands or prices. A high-current DC link, for example, is limited by the contact group's rated current and by temperature-rise verification, not by whether a given shell can be fitted. If the cable jacket OD falls outside the sealing range of the candidate configuration, confirm a matching configuration with the manufacturer before ordering; until the mating model, pinout and cable OD are confirmed against drawings, the interface cannot be judged compatible.

Where two contact groups share one insert, as in a '3+2' layout, check current, voltage and wiring for each group separately. The two ratings cannot be added into one machine-level rating, and different pin counts or face layouts do not become intermateable by sharing a series name.

Cable matching is two checks, not one

Conductor cross-section is specified per core in mm², AWG is a wire-gauge numbering system, and cable OD is the jacket diameter in mm. These are different quantities checked against different limits. A catalog-verified correspondence between AWG and mm² can be used for screening, but conductor size alone does not determine what the finished configuration may carry.

The jacket OD is a sealing condition in its own right. A cable jacket OD must fall inside the sealing adaptation range of the chosen configuration; checking only that the product maximum exceeds the cable OD is not enough. The same conductor cross-section can arrive with different jacket ODs depending on core count, insulation and jacket material. If the OD does not match, confirm an alternative configuration rather than assuming a seal can be swapped on site; any replacement method has to come from the model's documentation.

What IP67 does and does not qualify

IP67 describes dust-tightness and short-term immersion under specified test conditions, as defined in IEC 60529. The rating depends on a correctly mated and locked pair, intact seals, the specified cable OD and completed installation sealing; unmated ports, the far end of the cable and the equipment opening each need separate treatment. Short immersion, long-term immersion and high-pressure washdown are different test regimes, so an IP67 marking alone does not qualify a connector for continuous underwater service or washdown duty; those duties need verification with depth, duration, temperature, medium and cleaning method stated.

The same caution applies nearby: IP6X dust protection does not qualify a connector for explosive dust atmospheres. The stated '1,000+ hours UV' and '480+ hours salt spray' figures are company-provided performance information for specific material and plating combinations, and test hours cannot be converted into years of outdoor or seaside service. Request the record for the material, color and product version you intend to buy.

Mounting form and mating halves are separate choices

Front-panel, rear-panel, flange and inline (cable-to-cable) describe mounting structures; pin and socket describe the contact form, and housing gender is a further attribute. They are chosen independently. An end-face drawing should state the viewing direction and the keying reference, because a mirrored view does not prove intermateability. Two connectors that both carry an M12 label are not interchangeable by name alone: interface dimensions, thread or locking structure, coding, pin count, pinout and the specified mating model must all match the drawings on both sides.

Unless a configuration is explicitly rated for live mating, operate it de-energized. During assembly, verify the mating part and pin positions with power off, keep sealing faces clean, confirm the seal is seated, then lock as specified; torque and stripping dimensions come from the model's own documents, not from habit.

Material and certification claims at the right level

UL 94 V-0 is a flammability classification for a plastic material, tied to a grade and a thickness; a UL yellow card covers the plastic, not the finished connector. Product-level documents such as UL 2238, UL 1977, TÜV and SAA cover only the models, ratings, structural versions and validity status named in each certificate, while CE rests on the applicable regulations and the declaration file. Request documents against the exact target SKU.

Contact materials follow the same rule. Solid phosphor-bronze contacts with 2 μin (about 0.0508 μm) gold plating are a company-provided specification valid only for products marked with that configuration; the gold tone in a rendering is not evidence of plating thickness or spring material.

Information to submit before samples are confirmed

A comparable quotation and a valid sample start from the same package:

Custom designs need sample validation before release, and installation values such as torque come from the model's documentation. With the items above, the remaining open points can be closed against the chosen SKU's datasheet and test records.

Frequently asked questions

Can an IP67 connector run continuously underwater or under high-pressure washdown?

Not on the IP67 marking alone. These are different test conditions from short-term immersion. Provide water depth, duration, temperature, medium and cleaning method so a configuration with corresponding verification can be selected.

Can the two contact groups of a 3+2 connector be added into one rating?

No. The groups have separate current, voltage and wiring specifications and are checked individually; the ratings are not additive, and a shared insert does not make different layouts intermateable.

Does UL 94 V-0 material mean the finished connector is UL certified?

No. UL 94 V-0 classifies the plastic material under stated grade and thickness conditions. The connector's certification scope must be checked in the product-level certificate for the exact model, ratings and structural version.

Is the gold color in product photos proof of plating?

No. Product images are renderings that illustrate material and environment. Plating thickness and base material are confirmed only through the specification of the marked configuration; where 2 μin gold is specified, that equals about 0.0508 μm.
