Waterproof Connector Manufacturer RFQ Requirements Checklist

An RFQ for waterproof connectors produces comparable quotes only when every manufacturer prices the same configuration. This checklist fixes the mating pair and pin assignment, per-contact load, conductor and jacket diameter, environmental evidence, and acceptance documents — and flags what no public catalog page can price for you.

Scope and boundaries

Applies to RFQs and technical reviews for waterproof circular connectors and custom cable assemblies sourced from a manufacturer, at specification stage. A waterproof connector RFQ only produces comparable quotes when every supplier prices the same configuration: the same mating pair and pin assignment, the same cable and sealing range, and the same list of evidence documents. These public pages define which conditions must be confirmed and which performance figures are supplier-declared; they do not state prices, minimum order quantities, lead times, or the certification scope of any specific part number, so those answers must come back from the manufacturer against the named SKU.

Why two quotes for the same series rarely match

Most RFQ rounds for waterproof connectors start with a series name, a pin count and a target IP rating — and most quotes come back priced on different configurations. One quote may cover solid phosphor-bronze contacts with gold plating on a molded cable assembly, while another covers a field-assembly plug with a different termination and no cable at all. Both can be honest quotes; they simply do not describe the same part, so the numbers cannot be ranked.

A quote that does not name the mating pair, the termination method, and the cable it was priced on is a budgetary number, not a comparable one. The fix is a single configuration line that every bidder must price, plus a shared list of the items the buyer has not decided yet.

Define the interface task and the exact mating pair

Write down what the connector does on the machine: cable-end extension, panel feed-through or field termination. Mounting structure and contact gender are separate choices — front or rear panel mounting, flange or in-line describes the structure, while pin or socket describes the contacts. Cutout and panel thickness belong in the RFQ only when the design actually mounts on a panel. Every face view should state its viewing direction and keying datum, because a mirrored drawing does not prove mating.

Do not rely on the series name alone. Parts labeled M8, M12 or M16 still need interface dimensions, thread or locking form, coding, pin count and the named mating model checked against both drawings before anyone quotes a molded assembly.

State the load per contact, and keep contact groups separate

Rated current is marked per contact or per defined contact group, and rated voltage follows the corresponding insulation structure, so a '3+2' layout cannot be quoted as the sum of the two groups. Give working voltage, current per contact, pin count and the pin assignment table, and note how many cores carry load simultaneously — concurrent energization, conductor size, ambient temperature and heat dissipation all shift temperature rise. Catalog ratings are a first screen; the final check is the datasheet plus temperature-rise verification under real duty.

Describe the cable twice: conductor, then jacket

Conductor cross-sectional area in mm² or AWG and cable jacket outer diameter in mm are separate specifications, and the jacket OD must fall inside the sealing adaptation range of the chosen part, not merely below its maximum. Two cables with the same conductor area can differ in OD through core count, insulation and jacket, so one value cannot be inferred from the other. For a custom harness, add length and tolerance, branch positions, exit direction and end preparation — that lets the manufacturer quote the assembly, not just the connector.

Attach conditions to every rating and certificate

IP67 describes dust protection and short-term immersion under specified test conditions with the connector correctly mated and locked; long-term immersion and high-pressure washdown are different test conditions that need their own validation data. If the equipment sees either, state depth, duration, water temperature, medium and cleaning method, and ask which configurations carry matching verification. IEC 60529 defines the degrees of protection; it does not certify that a given SKU passed them.

Treat declared figures the same way: UV resistance of 1,000 hours or more and salt spray of 480 hours or more apply to the configurations they were declared for and stay declarations until the matching records arrive. UL 94 V-0 is a flammability rating for a plastic material, not product certification. For UL 2238, UL 1977, TÜV, SAA or CE, request the documents per part number and read which models, ratings and structure versions they cover.

Quantities, samples and the review before you send

Break quantities into stages — samples, pilot run, production — because records apply to the model, sample version and test conditions they were made on, and later batches tie inspection records to those versions. Ask for price, minimum order quantity and lead time per named SKU: those are commercial answers given against a fixed configuration, not facts to pre-fill from a catalog page.

If any of these items is still open — pin assignment, jacket outer diameter versus sealing range, panel cutout, or certification scope — mark the RFQ as budgetary and list the open items explicitly; otherwise issue it as a firm RFQ with acceptance documents named. Then send the package to the engineering team, not just the sales inbox.

Frequently asked questions

Both quotes say M12, 4-pin, IP67 — can I compare them on price?

Not yet. Contact plating, termination method, the cable included, its sealing range and certification scope can all differ behind the same series name. Align the configuration and evidence list first; only then does the lower number mean lower cost.

Does a UL 94 V-0 material mean the connector is UL certified?

No. UL 94 V-0 rates the flammability of a plastic material at a given thickness and color. Product certification covers the models, ratings and structure versions listed in the certificate, so request the file for your part number and market.

Should conductor size be given in AWG or mm²?

Either works; both designate conductor size in different systems, and catalog correspondence applies where verified. Keep jacket outer diameter as a separate line in millimeters, because sealing and clamping match the OD, not the conductor.

What if I have a sample but no drawing?

A sample or photos can start an engineering evaluation. Add load, cable, mounting, environment and staged quantities, and confirm mating by part number and both drawings before treating the quote as final.
