Salt Fog Conditions for Waterproof Connectors Explained

For coastal equipment, a '480-hour salt spray' line is a starting point, not a verdict. It is enterprise-provided performance information tied to one material and plating combination, and it cannot be converted into years of seaside service. Here is how to check plating, test criteria and sealing conditions before you freeze a BOM.

Scope and boundaries

This article supports selection reviews of LLT waterproof circular connectors for equipment operating in coastal or salt-laden air, where the quoted performance line is salt fog resistance of 480 hours or more. It explains how to read that figure, which plating and contact conditions it depends on, and which sealing checks sit outside it. The available materials document enterprise-provided salt fog and plating information, but they do not identify which SKU carries which plating thickness, and they contain no third-party test report or field service-life data. Model-level parameters and the corresponding record must be requested per project.

Start with the coastal duty, not the test number

A connector on coastal equipment sees chloride-laden air, condensation, wind-driven spray and often regular washdown. Before comparing test numbers, describe what reaches the connector: sheltered bay or exposed frame, mated for years or opened for service, and distance from direct splash. That duty description decides which verification items matter.

The selection guide follows the same order: define rain, immersion, washdown, UV, salt fog and temperature first, then match materials, seals and verification items to them. A salt fog figure is one input to that match; read without the duty description, it compares nothing.

What the 480-hour salt fog figure actually states

The stated indicator is salt fog resistance of 480 hours or more for applicable configurations, provided as enterprise performance information tied to a specific material and plating combination. A '480 hours salt spray' figure supports a coastal application only for the specific material and plating combination, sample state and test criteria it was recorded under; it does not convert into years of seaside service life. The evidence grade matters: this is manufacturer-provided data, with the corresponding specification or record available on request, not a third-party report reproduced in public.

Appearance corrosion and post-test electrical performance are separate criteria, and a result recorded against one does not confirm the other. A housing can show visible change while the contact path still meets its limits, or look acceptable while a spring contact has degraded. Decide which criterion the project actually needs before reading the figure, and ask for both where contact resistance matters.

Plating and contact material set the boundary of the result

LLT states a preference for solid phosphor bronze contacts, with plating selected per product specification. A 2 μin gold plating equals about 0.0508 μm, and the published specification applies only to products marked with that configuration. The gold tone in rendered product images expresses material; it is not a basis for judging plating thickness, finish or the spring element inside. Some higher nickel or gold plating configurations are judged by maintained electrical performance after the test, with models and conditions per their reports.

The practical rule: a salt fog result belongs to a plating combination, not to a series name. When a requirement moves from one model to another, the plating question has to be asked again, and the plating, applicable model and verification conditions should be written into the product requirements.

Match the requirement to a report, not a headline

If the requirement sheet names the target model, its plating and the report criteria, then the 480-hour condition can be checked against the corresponding test record; if the plating configuration is not yet confirmed, corrosion resistance for that SKU cannot be judged from the headline figure. The record to request should state the plating type and thickness, the sample state during exposure, the test conditions and the pass criteria — appearance and, where relevant, electrical performance after exposure.

Where two candidate configurations differ mainly in plating, compare them on the recorded criteria rather than on the shared 480-hour line. For a coastal enclosure that opens for service, treat the 480-hour figure as a screening input and request the report for the exact SKU before freezing the design. Stop the comparison if neither candidate has a retrievable record.

Salt fog hours sit beside the sealing conditions, not above them

Corrosion resistance of a plating and ingress protection of a mated pair are different properties. IP67 denotes dust protection and short-term immersion under specified test conditions, defined in IEC 60529; it holds when the connector is correctly mated and locked, seals are intact, the specified cable outer diameter is used and installation sealing is completed. Unmated ports, the far end of the cable and device openings need separate treatment. A salt fog result does not relax any of these conditions.

Coastal housings in sunlight raise a parallel check: the stated UV resistance of 1,000 hours or more is likewise enterprise-provided information bounded by material grade, color, product version and the test record, and accelerated hours do not convert into outdoor years. Cable selection stays two separate checks as well — conductor cross-section in mm² or AWG per the catalog correspondence, and jacket outer diameter in mm against the sealing range.

Checks to close before releasing the BOM

Before the configuration is frozen, close the items below; any item left open is a request to the supplier, not an assumption. This article cites no model parameter table, so current ratings, contact counts and cable ranges still need the catalog data for the chosen model.

With those items closed, the salt fog line becomes a checked condition instead of a hope; with any of them open, the figure stays a screening input only.

  • Target model named, with plating type and thickness confirmed for that SKU rather than assumed from series-level material.
  • Corresponding salt fog specification or record requested, covering sample state, test conditions, appearance and electrical criteria.
  • Mating plan fixed: mated-and-locked state defined, cable jacket outer diameter inside the sealing range, mounting form per drawing.
  • UV line checked for material, color and product version where the housing sees direct sunlight.
  • Operating rule set: connectors not marked for live mating are connected and disconnected with power off.
  • Duty description, cable data and target model sent together when requesting the corresponding record.

Frequently asked questions

Does 480 hours of salt spray testing equal a fixed number of years at sea?

No. Test hours describe performance under the recorded conditions and cannot be converted into field service life. Request the conditions and criteria of the corresponding record rather than a conversion factor.

The contact looks gold in the product image. Does it have the 2 μin plating?

Not necessarily. Rendered gold tone expresses material and is not evidence of plating thickness. The 2 μin figure, about 0.0508 μm, applies only to configurations marked with it; confirm plating in the written requirements.

If the plating passes salt spray, is the connector sealed for coastal use?

Plating corrosion resistance and ingress protection are separate properties. IP67 holds for a correctly mated and locked connector with intact seals and the specified cable diameter; unmated ports and device openings need their own treatment.

Can one model's salt fog result cover other models in the same series?

No. The result is tied to one material and plating combination and to the sample state tested. Other models need their own corresponding record, even within one series.
