M19 Waterproof Lighting Connector: Split Power and Control
An outdoor luminaire often needs mains power and low-energy dimming control in the same run. Power and control circuits can share one M19 waterproof connector only when the chosen contact layout matches each circuit's voltage, current and conductor size; otherwise they need separate interfaces.
Scope and boundaries
Applies to LLT M19 circular waterproof connectors on outdoor and horticultural lighting: driver feeds, lamp outputs, dimming and sensor lines. The published table supports screening by voltage, current and conductor cross section; it does not confirm temperature rise under simultaneous loading, control-signal performance, or certification for a specific part number, and those points need the full drawings and corresponding reports.
Start with the luminaire's circuits, not the shell
An outdoor luminaire usually places two different duties on its connectors: a power feed to the driver, and low-energy control lines for dimming, zoning or sensors. The feed may run at mains level on larger conductors while the control lines carry little current on small wires; treating them as one generic multi-pin requirement is how mismatched interfaces get specified.
The M19 series is built around this lighting situation: catalog layouts run from 2 to 18 contacts with threaded, quick-coupling and self-locking structures, plus hybrid layouts that group power and control contacts in one shell. A hybrid layout does not by itself define a protocol, channel or wiring order; the wiring definition comes from the luminaire's electrical design.

Read the ratings table as separate contact groups
The published M19 summary shows why the two duties screen on different rows. Two-, three- and four-contact configurations are rated 600 V and 20 A, five- and six-contact versions 300 V and 15 A, and from 7 to 18 contacts the ratings are 100 V and 5 A, with conductor limits shrinking from 2.5 mm² down to 0.2 mm². Each row applies to its own configuration; the series maximum never transfers to another contact count.
Rated current is stated per contact or per designated contact group, and rated voltage per insulation structure. In a hybrid shell the groups are checked separately, and adding group currents into a single connector rating is not valid. Simultaneous loading, conductor size, ambient temperature and heat dissipation all affect temperature rise, so a table pass is screening, not final approval.

One shell for both circuits, or one connector each
Power and control circuits can share one M19 waterproof connector only when the chosen contact layout matches each circuit's voltage, current and conductor size; otherwise they need separate interfaces. The catalog lists hybrid layouts such as 2+4, 2+5, 3+4 and 3+5 for this grouping, and the public summary lists straight contact counts, so hybrid group ratings are confirmed on the part-number drawing. If the power group fits a 600 V, 20 A row and the control group fits the rating of its own contact count, one hybrid M19 shell can carry both circuits; if either group exceeds its row, or no listed layout covers both conductor sizes, plan two separate connectors rather than forcing one.
Sharing one shell means one sealing path, one cutout and one mating action, but it locks both circuits into a single wiring definition and a single service event. If maintenance requires disconnecting the control side while the power feed stays made — or the reverse — the conclusion flips toward two independent interfaces.

Match coupling and mounting to the fixture hardware
The M19 family offers threaded, quick-coupling and self-locking structures: coupling style decides how the pair locks, and mounting form decides how the interface lands on the equipment. Front-panel, rear-panel and flange versions each carry their own cutout, panel-thickness and locking conditions from the part-number drawing; in-line joints connect two cable runs and need clearance for mating travel and cable bend. Pin and socket describe the contacts, not the housing, and identical contact counts still do not prove that two parts mate.

Keep IP67 valid on both circuits
IP67 means dust-tight construction and short-term immersion protection under specified test conditions. It holds when the pair is correctly mated and locked, seals are intact, and the cable outer diameter sits inside the sealing range. Unmated ports, the cable's far end and the equipment opening need separate measures. Long-term immersion and high-pressure washdown are different test regimes; where they apply, provide depth, duration, temperature, medium and cleaning method so a verified configuration can be selected.
Check the cable twice: conductor cross section in mm² per core picks the contact, and jacket outer diameter in mm picks the seal. The same conductor size can come in different outer diameters, so one number never substitutes for the other; where the catalog lists an AWG correspondence, use it.

What the public data does not settle
Table rows do not cover temperature rise with several groups loaded at once, dimming-signal behavior through a given layout, or certification status. UV resistance of 1,000 hours or more and salt spray of 480 hours or more are company-provided figures tied to material, color, version and records; test hours do not convert into years outdoors. UL 2238, UL 1977, TÜV and SAA documents cover the models and ratings named on each certificate — request them for the exact SKU.
One stop condition applies regardless of layout: unless the selected configuration is explicitly documented for load make and break, mate and unmate de-energized. If the design relies on swapping a live driver or sensor module, pause and confirm that requirement before proceeding.

Submit the data that fixes the configuration
The final part number, drawing and reports are confirmed only once the equipment side is described. Prepare the following before requesting samples or a quotation:
With these items, engineering can confirm whether one hybrid M19 or two separate interfaces fit, and which sealing range, coupling and mounting version applies; without them, the choice stays at screening level.
- Interface drawing or mating part number, with contact count and wiring definition per circuit
- Working voltage and current for the power feed and for each control line
- Conductor cross section per core in mm², or the catalog AWG correspondence
- Cable jacket outer diameter in mm, plus length, tolerance, flexibility and exit direction
- Mounting form, with panel thickness and cutout if panel-mounted
- Environment and required documents: rain, immersion, washdown, UV, salt spray, temperature, target-market certifications

Frequently asked questions
Can the dimming pair and the 20 A power feed share one M19 connector?
Yes, provided a listed hybrid layout covers both duties and the wiring order comes from the luminaire design. Each group keeps its own voltage, current and conductor limits, and group ratings are never added together; if no listed layout fits, use two separate interfaces.
Is the control side still protected when the connector is unplugged during service?
The IP67 statement applies to the correctly mated and locked condition. Protection of unmated ports is a separate item to confirm, as is the cable's far end and the panel opening; do not assume the mated rating covers an open interface.
Both ends are marked M19 — will they mate?
Not by name alone. Mating requires the same interface geometry, keying, contact count, pin assignment and coupling structure, plus confirmed mating part numbers; a similar appearance does not prove a compatible interface. Check both drawings, and where needed verify with confirmed samples.
